I’ll say up front the Shawarma Spiced Chicken is very much up my alley. Early into our Hello Fresh journey, I would say it is probably my second favorite recipe.
Hello Fresh says this is a 30 minute recipe. My timing was longer than 30 minutes but close enough that with a couple of tweaks to my execution, I’d have gotten it down to 30. Cooking jasmine rice was the longest step of the process at 15 minutes and was hands off.
This recipe has a shawarma sauce on chicken cutlets which are presented on top of jasmine rice. A tzatziki sauce goes on top of the chicken cutlets for serving. On the side is a cucumber, tomato, shallot salad. The salad was good but lacking. Quality of the tomato was, fine, which is expected for this time of year. Two Persian cucumbers were included but they were a little bland. Despite these two complaints, I was pleased with the salad and enjoyed how refreshing it was. This meal during the summer would work well.
The chicken is the star of the show. No, this isn’t a delicious Shawarma like you’d get in Israel but it was good. It’s this type of recipe that I like Hello Fresh for in that I wouldn’t make it on my own. If I had one complaint about the cutlets is they were different shapes and thicknesses. Cooking them on the pan meant they weren’t done at the same time. My wife doesn’t like warm spices (ex. cinnamon) with meats and she was pleased there wasn’t cinnamon in the spice mix. For a spice, it had good depth of flavor when combined with the yogurt and sour cream.
Dill is used in both sauces so if you don’t like dill, you may not like this recipe. Otherwise, you probably know what you’re getting yourself into with this recipe. It’s a perfect, refreshing, weeknight meal which I’d cook again.
